Sandberg, Jonathan G et al. 2013. “What Happens at Home Does Not Necessarily Stay at Home”: The Relationship of Observed Negative Couple Interaction with Physical Health Mental Health, and Work Satisfaction. Journal of Marriage and Family 75:808-821.
This article aims to test a conceptual model for understanding marriage-to-work spillover by using marital interaction as a predictor variable and mental and physical health as the mediator variables. It uses IFIRS (Iowa Family Interaction Rating Scales), a data consisting of 281 couples. Three broad research questions: to what extent is a 25-minute observation of actual husband and wife behaviors in negative marital interaction associated with husband and wife work satisfaction? To what extent does an actor’s health (physical and emotional) mediate the relationship between negative couple interaction and his or her work satisfaction? How about that of a partner? They found out that higher levels of negative marital interaction are associated with significantly lower work satisfaction for men. There was not a significant, direct relationship between marital interaction and work satisfaction for the women in this study. This article suggests that marital problems predict depression over time, not vice verse. It also suggests that Intervention that aims at improving the quality of marital interaction is of significant effect on improving the health and mental health of employees, etc.
