Bennett, Fran. 2013.“Researching Within-Household Distribution: Overview, Developments, Debates, and methodological Challenges.” Journal of Marriage and Family 75:582-597.
This article presents an overview of research on within-household distribution. Discussion about intrahousehold challenges the assumption about the family as a whole unit, and investigates the mechanism of control and sharing of resources within household and the extent of sharing within it.This article discusses three major questions: 1) inequalities between (gendered) individuals and the potential reasons for these; 2) how money is controlled and managed within household and how it is related to within-household inequality; 3) the possible explanations for the patterns. It then outlines significant developments and debates, within qualitative research in particular, in relation to the unit of analysis (i.e. from married couple to same-sex partners), the texture and meaning of financial dealings within couples, and the tensions between autonomy and equal sharing as values. Finally, itdiscusses several key methodological challenges, particularly to appropriate way to conduct cross-national research and figure out clear causal links.
